I'm trying to add a sidechain input to an Engineer's Thumb compressor. I keep getting stuck on what type of switched jack I need. Any way I try to arrange it doesn't seem to do what I want it to.

I want

Connection between IN1 and OUT1 when no cable is inserted.

Connection between IN2 (cable tip) and OUT2 when cable is inserted.

It's like a basic OR between two paths. One path with no cable, the other when there is a cable.

How can I set this up? Or am I trying to solve the wrong problem?

If the second buffer is good, why can't the signal flow through it either way?

Signal from IN1 must not pass to R2 when a cable is inserted. Or am I thinking about this wrong? I don't think I want the normal audio passing to the level detector when I insert sidechain audio.

I have found this doc on switchcraft's website.

But I'm at a loss to determine which one might work here or where to buy any of the odder ones if it would work.

Ah ha! I think this just really clicked for me. I had one of these mono type switching jacks already but I had abandoned that idea. I hadn't thought for some reason of always taking output from the tip, but SENDING audio to the tip lug through the switched lug.

I'm pretty sure this is the answer I've been looking for but I have to get the jack out and actually check what I'm thinking.

I think this will work? Looks like it can break two connections simultaneously.

^ that's the type I'd suggest for all your funny switching apps. two isolated double throw switches, and stereo input. there are other, box-types w/ same spec might be easier to handle lugs wise.
