QuoteYeah, Alfa have cloned that one too - the AS3280.
Wow.  Those guys seem committed.

I had poke around looks like alpha have quite a few products, pretty much all specialized linear stuff.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.

They're doing some really great stuff.

My absolute favourite is the AS3372E, an extended version of the the CEM3372 Mixer+VCF+VCA "synth voicing chip" that turns up in the Prophet T8 and Oberheim Matrix/Xpander. They didn't only copy the features of the original chip, but also added an extra pair of VCAs to it so that you have another crossfade/panning block available. The most obvious use is to provide voltage-controlled panning for the output signal, but that's not the only thing you could do with it. Definitely a highly specialised IC, but an absolute boon for a synth voice.

Original SSM2164 too, nice. I have a few of those with AD markings. They were expensive back then.

I picked up a few of the new Alfa 3280s a few weeks back and hope to play with them this week or next weekend.

While with most OTAs we have found easy workarounds/subs, like the 3080 or 3094 to LM13700, I'm still waiting for the AS3280s to not cost so damn much  :'(

That's true, AD were good about samples.

They aren't cheap but also aren't "that" bad in small bulk.  I paid 6.88 each at quantity of 10. Could look into a group buy if say 10 people wanted 10 each even but dunno.

Cost less than a new cheap triode :P

You're talking about the AS3280/AS3280A, right? I get their B2B price list, and that chip is twice or three times the price of many of their others, so for whatever reason, it must be an expensive one to manufacture. That finishes up reflected in final prices to customers.

And yeah...compared to a decent tube, it starts to look pretty reasonable! Also lighter, more robust, and with easier power supply requirements...no brainer, really! ;)
