There's a simple equation for this, I figured everyone knew:

N = N + 1

Woah!  I just had one of those "stop-the-universe-for-just-a-minute" moments, because I immediately recognised this formula: it's EXACTLY the same as the number of guitars I should own.

It's a lot easier to buy (or build, or "design") a dirt/OD/distortion/fuzz//whatever pedal than it is to make inspired, meaningful music.

I have a friend that just started building and was asking me how to learn more. The best advice I could think of was to build a bunch of pedals that don't work and debug them. That's how I learned

Fortunately I was incompetent enough that I never had that problem But of course going for modulation would be a safe way to make sure it won't work.
