I just took some time to read it. Wow, it brings lots of memories of the forum's early years. Even some names didn't got to appear in the article, I'm pretty happy some of them did, like Mark and Jack. And one of the most amazing things is to read back then we already had names like RG and Mark posting on the forum and helping people, and then we notice they're still here! That's awesome!

Btw, if it's possible to put "custom status" for some users where it's written "member"/"great contribuitor"/"amazing", I'd agree to give those people a custom status like "godfather" (as they're already called in the article) :icon_mrgreen:
We're still here because Aron is.  What's awesome is watching people who started out here as newbies turning into seasoned pros.  I used to feel compelled to respond to everything.  But now I know there's an army of smart caring people I can rely on to provide support and guidance for pretty much any topic and problem.

I did not read the article because "it wants" information to veiw.

It will accept any rubbish as an email address - it doesn't check anything or require you to verify by a link in your inbox. Type anonymous@nowhere.com - just anything that has an email structure will get you in :)

I should also say that was fascinating, and great to put some faces to names!

I foolishly used my real email. (I know who this magazine is.) Today I got a Newsletter. With an unsubscribe link.

Way to go, guys. Everyone interviewed for the article is a legend in their own right and this is well earned.

Even the forum software for AMPAGE was DIY, and it was great.

The title is a little deceptive.  It's not about boutique pedals, but rather about how the DIY scene and increasing informational resources gave birth to what became boutique pedals.  People tend to associate "boutique" with high prices and niche markets, but the article isn't about that at all.  Analog Mike Piera and Robert Keeley are in the article because they both started out doing mods to existing pedals, which is precisely what many of us here do, generally to please ourselves rather than to cater to customers.

Kevin reminds me that if DIY had been the focus, then they might have noted the emergence of businesses that tailor to DIY, most of which emerged as just DIYers who could provide something useful to the community, starting with Steve Daniels and JD Sleep, and going to all the parts vendors and pcb and kit makers.

Somehow I missed this a few days ago, but just went in and read it, thanks for sharing! And of course thank you Aron for continuing to host this place online where we can hang out! If the DIYSB Pub ever opens, first round is on me 8)

I stand by my words (mostly because I'm sure there won't be 45819 people that actually show up :P)

I didn't know that. I can still see that AMPAGE original forum in my mind's eye.

From what I recall, tboy wrote it himself. I really liked the layout he used, the left pane with a tree view of the threads (showing the actual "chain" of replies between messages), message view/edit on the right pane.

Awesome! I learned some back end programming (NodeJS/Express) during this "break" but I wouldn't want to write my own forum software!

GFR

I wrote one once, shamelessly copying the "look and feel" of AMPAGE. CGI (common gateway interface), coded in Delphi.

aron

That is awesome. But we already knew you were awesome! I've been programming for a longe time, but only now starting to delve into the back end stuff. I keep having too much fun with mobile and Apple Watch programming. Now I'm working with Flutter which is cross platform.
