It was a well-known trick with an old type of telephone earpiece to pull the magnet off. I was even asked why this octave doubled during a job interview once. Without a polarizing magnet, every half cycle results in a pull on the diaphragm instead of a pull & push. Of course it relies on the "spring" of the diaphram to return between peaks.
