Hey yall, a few parts I'm having trouble sourcing.

J201 - read on here a 2N5484 is a good sub, I'm using it in a SS/BS Mini would that work? If not, should I pony up the $5 each on mouser or is it worth the risk for some chinese ebay action? https://www.ebay.com/itm/10PCS-J201-JFET-N-Channel-Transistor-50mA-40V-TO-92/311472667157?hash=item488537ba15:g:OhsAAOSwxixaEAQr

JRC386 - can I just use an LM386 for an uglyface?

ICM7555 - any easy to source replacements? (uglyface)

iainpunk

yes the 5484 would probably work (95% sure)
yes they are the same chip by different manufacturers
no, it needs to be the Cmos 555 timer, not the normal one, it doesn't work. i have had a hard time finding one of those for a cmos project untill i went to my local electronics shop, they had them there.

cheers, Iain
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

cheers

For the cmos 555, you can find it under those names: ICM7555, LMC555, TLC555

a lot of the transistors on china are fake. some of the jfets are actually npn transitors lol...

For the J201s you can always go with the SMD version, MMBFJ201 which only costs pennies/cents from Mouser and the usual suppliers. You can get adapters to use them as through-hole.

I fully agree.  It can be tough to buy them from Mouser though.  Many have tried, only to find the shipping date repeatedly pushed back until they give up.  Smallbear has some SMT J201s for $0.40.

Also, it isn't hard to make an adapter board for these from a veroboard scrap.

Edit:
I got bored, so I made up a MMBFJ201 adapter board example.  Top two holes on the left are connected by a jumper.

Pinout across the bottom is DSG.

I recently bought all of these at Tayda Electronics. 386 and 7555 were all a good deal. The 2n5458 were $0.99 each which seemed high but equivalent parts elsewhere seemed about the same, so getting all the parts with one order was best route.

I imagine that's what we'll all be doing shortly if we want to keep building through-hole projects with any JFETS. Pedal PCB sells 201's pre-installed on an adapter card if you want to pay $2.00 each.

Cool little board Eric.

Today Mouser's showing 82,000 can ship immediately so might be time to order.
