Hi to all!

I just built a redshift phaser. It works but to me there is a problem with the feedback knob.

When i turn it clockwise, after 50%, i got a big volume drop and it seems very strange.

Here's the kit instruction:

https://aionfx.com/app/files/docs/redshift_documentation.pdf

Any ideas? What can i check??? I have no voltage reference unfortunely.

Thanks

I have the same sort of sounding issue... So far I've been told to check bias stuff of the transistor with the pot.
I got my readings by plugging a cable into the input, hooking up a battery. Clipping the black cable to the ground/base at the center of the affected pot, and taking transistor readings at each post with pot at different positions.

Check my recent post titled "first build weirdness" to see what I've done so far as our problems are similar.

I built this kit recently. I have some volume drop too as Feedback is increased (I wouldn't say "big" though. Maybe -10 db at the most). I think that's why there is a volume control.

If i had to guess, I'd say Feedback is kind of a blend control between wet and dry signal. It controls how much dry signal is mixed with the effect, so if you decrease the dry signal, volume is dropping .

Great phaser. Vibrato mod is amazing.

A *sudden* *large* drop? Supersonic oscillation. Re-re-recheck these parts values.

Did you use the kit board? If you did any off-board wiring around the Feedback network, try moving it. Show us a picture.

This is the thing! So is it normal?

Do you also find that at slow speed setting the rate knob in the first 50% of its rotation is almost unusable?

Yes, i used musikding kit. I checked all that circuit portion and all is ok. I think that's the eh la bas ma case..

I think it's normal as long as you don't need to increase volume knob too much. With Depth and Feedback fully CW, I set the volume around 3 o'clock to reach volume in bypass.

If the Range switch is set upward, and range knob fully CCW, the sweep is very slow (40 sec sweep according to instructions). I like a very progressive phasing effect, so no I don't think it's unusable. I need to increase Depth and Feedback to get the effect more noticeable though.

I noticed a slight sound difference in the phaser if I switch between A & B. Hard to describe, maybe the sweep is working on different frequencies, or something like that. I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that but I like it. Is it the same for you ?

I'd be curious to have a look on your artwork. Here is mine (reply #29293) :

Thanks for your reply!
This evening i'll try two switches and i'll tell you ;)
Saw your build! Great idea to use rice package! Great!
Mine is matte black with yellow knob.. this evening i'll post a photo. :)

Thanks

SECOND QUESTION:

Any idea to add a rate led?

I used this solution:

9v to a 2n3904 collector
Schematic Q4 emitter to 2n3904 base
2n3903 emitter ->trimpot - led- ground

The led blinks but it'a not so noticeable..I'd like to have much more excursion.

Thanks

Try putting the trimpot+LED from 9V down to the collector. Like that, the base voltage doesn't have to overcome the LED's forward voltage as well as the Base-Emitter 0.6V drop before the transistor will turn on.

Whether that works, I don't know, but that's my gut feeling.

Thanks for suggestion. Tried but seems to not work properly.

I tried this solution:

9V -> LED -> 2N5087 emitter,
2N5087 base to Q4 Emitter
2N5087 Collector to 47k R to ground.

Not super smooth but the pulse seems better.
