hey! are we getting the band back together?

Only 15 pages to go till resolution.

I'm convinced this is RG having a larf  :icon_lol:

LOL i hope this doesnt take nearly as long to figure out and fix lmao

and alot of the pedals ive been building have been working on the first try! and if its not on the first try its usually a minor problem that is super easy to fix, such as a bad input/output jack or a bad soldering joint on the footswitch or something.

snow123

and putting a buffer in front of the pedal does fix the issue

snow123

is there a way to put an always on buffer in the pedal?

Yep, just pop one of these in between the footswitch and the rat board:

ok, and is there another way to fix that without the shielded wire? 'cause i dont have any shielded wire.

snow123

i just feel like putting a buffer in between the board and footswitch is just kinda a band-aid fix.

ok i just cut up a guitar cable, so where do i connect the shield?

snow123

do i put the side thats going to the circuit, to the input jacks gnd and put the side thats on the footswitch where the signal part is? heres a crappy drawing of what i mean i guess:

the part thats coming out if the main wire is the shield

On any convenient ground place..
(e.g. water pipe, radiator, mains socket ground prong receptable..) :icon_biggrin:

P.S.
Where is your guitar cable shield connected..??
Just consider this extra cable as an extension between IN jack & PCB and PCB & OUT jack..

Do you know what you're doing?

Yeah just chop it up with a pair of cutless cutters. Don't forget the solderless solder and tapeless tape.

please, snow, post pictures of your finished builds in the pictures section. it's only fair on the rest of us, give us something to cling to.

It is most likely the layout. You should not need shielded cable but you do need good layout technique. Keep the In and Out wires separated by an inch or more, and the wires to the Drive pot should be as short as possible.

I was once hired by a commercial pedal company to fix a problem with its Rat-derivative that was exactly like this, and all it took was a better pcb layout and cleaner building practices.

Best regards, Jack

I hope this makes more sense, I just soldered the tip and gnd together on the side that goes to the foot switch.

Um - no. I think you've just grounded the signal. You want the centre conductor connected normally between jack tip and switch input lug, and the shield connected at one end only the jack ground (or the ground lug on the switch). You should also use shielded wire from the switch to the board input connected the same way.

That's great to know. I admire your tenacity, a lot of my non-working early builds met the Pliers Of Death pretty swiftly. I think you'd benefit from a little more patience and taking the time to understand the advice you've been given, rather than making your own assumptions of what you think they meant and jumping in both feet first. As you were...

ok, i was wondering if doing this would ground the signal as in reducing noise, or just connect the main signal to ground as in giving me no signal at all.

And what do you mean by centre conductor? Like this part of the wire?
