At the end of the Mr Black article he talks about current limiting resistors and switch bounce. That is a different solution for a different cause of pop. In real life these things we worry about when they happen. Some switches are microphonic. Some people are super sensitive to any pop even a tiny bump. They are better off with buffers and things. And the higher the gain of your circuit, the more problem you may have.

This simplest of stomp box issues leads to endless garden paths, each with lots of rabbit holes.

I've enjoyed the conversation. And if I hear (or think I hear) some big difference with R1 removed from the design, I will report back.

Closing the loop on this thread for internet posterity.

Omitted the R1 - 470K resistor. Pedal sounds great. Doesn't pop in any noticeable way on bypass. 

I didn't bother trying to trying to take the thing apart to install R1 and do A/B testing. I think that's more trouble than it's worth.
