Klone Unity level issue

Just completed my first Klone using the Sabro layout (https://www.sabrotone.com/klon-centaur-build-finished/)

I wired true bypass and omitted (numbers via original schematic) R3, R4, R26, R27, R28 & C2. I'm also using a MAX1044 instead of the 7660 as I was having noise/level issues.

After some trial and error I finally got working. It sounds nice but I think my unity level is a bit low. On a lower-mid gain setting the VOL is turned to 1-2 O'clock to reach unity.

Other Klones I have, unity is reached much earlier (around 9 o'clock).

I also notice I'm not getting the same fullness/magical harmonics from other Klones I have. May have to try some other diodes. I'm using NOS single black band 1n34as

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Sounds to me like there's something wrong still. Not something critical, but perhaps a wrong value somewhere, giving you not enough gain and therefore not enough level or harmonics.

Keep hunting?

Or post some voltages/pictures and let us lot take a look. You never know, someone might spot something. Fresh eyes helps.

Hey Druid,

Not sure photos will help, it's a bit messy. I'll go through everything again today and match it against the layout. Voltages seem good as well.

3: 3.9
4: 0
5: 4.7

Yay figured it out.

I had the wrong value in the Sabro R25 (560R).

Also had a gain wire in the wrong hole on board.

All good now!

Comparing it to an AF2 (aluminum Falcon) that I have, it's very very close. Mine is slightly thinner/brighter than the AF2. The AF2's mids are slightly smoother/Warmer, fuller lower end. I imagine this is where diode selection play a role. May try swapping the 3.9nf with a 6.8

Any pointers always welcome

Thank you!
