Any recommendation for an entry-level Function Generator for learning more about pedal electronics?

Now I think of it, would love a recommendation on an upgrade on my toy DSO150 oscilloscope too.

I have recently bought FNIRSI-1013D Digital tablet oscilloscope. Dual channel, 100M bandwidth and 1GS sampling rate. It is OK, big, simple touch screen working much better than DSO202 I had before. Only thing I don't like is position of the first channel plug, it is too close to the edge of a grove and it's not easy to secure it, but otherwise it is very nice. It has FFT analysis, too, but it is not so usable to me since it lacks any numerical readings.

If you need both signal generator and oscilloscope, you may consider FNIRSI-1014D.

For super low budget version - check XR2206 kits on ebay. You have to buy the chip elsewhere because the one included is counterfeit and has problems once VCC is >9V.

Isn't it expected that XR2206 doesn't work with less than 10V VCC, since datasheet says that working range is from 10 to 26V?

The old-old-OLD '8038 and '06 function generators should be left to die. There is a thing call "DDS Function Signal Generator" sells for $25 in your hand which blows the old chips away.

Here's one, not that I like ePay, but to help you find it on your preferred store.

Tack-solder scraps of wire under the silly BNC jacks so you can use clip-leads.

How about something like this for generating signals for testing?

Guy is asking for "entry-level". :)

Fair enough, but €100 is cheap for a function generator, and a little sequence is less tedious to listen to than a tone, although you can get a tone out of a little synth too. I used to use a Roland SH101 as my bench function generator; Ramps, squares, pulses, etc all available and you can run a little tune through stuff too.

That module Paul found is much cheaper still though, I agree. For pure "function gen" you'll struggle to do better.

I got one of those DDS units (specifically SainSmart UDB1002S DDS Signal Digital Generator, 2MHz), and it's been working out pretty well for me.

It was an upgrade from using an audio cable plugged into my phone, which was way too noisy.

Would this work ? I have one, it is basic, read the reviews, you can't change the frequency by dialing up / down. You set it and push start.

That looks like it will kill two birds with one stone!

I make do with a little app on my iPhone. Even though I bought the app and a lightning to mini jack adaptor, it was still less than £10

I've used a set of guitar samples stored on my phone for testing stuff too. It got pretty irritating though, so I bought a very cheap MP3 player to use instead. Haven't tried that yet.

What's wrong with them for this application? The assembled board is a fraction of the cost of the DSP generator.

I've got a free app for my Android phone and one tablet. It does two independant channels (left and right) and will do sweeps, bursts, modulation, &c.

They've also got a nice spectrum analyzer app

I would over buy, but that's me. You can get
a used older HP , TEK, Agilent, Leader, B&K etc for under a $100 and it's much better quality.

For years, I have used RG's Quick and Dirty Test Oscillator for testing. Easy and simple to build.

But it seems like the original link at geofex is dead!

I think I actually built this variation: https://music.codydeschenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Quick-and-Less-Dirty-Oscillator-R.G.-Keen-TRANSFER.pdf

If the OP needs just a simple audio test signal, then R.G.'s circuit will fit the bill. It's cheap and easy to build. I've been using the one I built some time ago.

Think I'm going to go with a FNIRSI-1014D scope and signal combo, price is not bad and think it will help me learn more about electronics outside of just pedals.
