the main motivator for me is using as few components as possible. i don't have a particularly good reason for this (or a reason at all), i guess im just cheap for some reason...

most of my designs using transistors start out with a bunch of opamps, which one by one get replaced with transistors, finding ways to apply a certain ''elegance''
