brand-new "original" maestro effects, including some things that didn't probably exist when maestro actually did ;)

I'd like to see a schematic of that one.

If they DID resurrect anything, I sure hope they didn't rely on the old factory schematics, many of which contained copious errors.  I'm not that smart when it comes to discrete circuits, but even I look at some of these, tilt my head and go "Well THAT can't be right":  https://hammer.ampage.org/files/Maestroworld.zip

Jeez....hope they resurrected the TB MK 1 circuit  in silicon form.

I can say from experience that the Fuzz Phazzer FP-1 schematic is accurate, at least! Of course, they're not making that one.

One thing that's interesting about the Delay and the Chorus is that they both have more controls than they put on the panel.

The delay has a switch for modulation, but the Rate and Depth controls are internal trimpots (so set and forget). Similarly with the Chorus - there's a switch for amplitude modulation, but there's also an internal trimpot to adjust the level of the modulation.

That's an interesting design choice, I think.

Beyond that, "Maestro" is just a brand name now. At least when the old synth companies got restarted, they had the original people involved: Bob Moog, Dave Smith, Tom Oberheim. This doesn't seem like that.

Sticking modulation rate and or depth inside the box is something I find really annoying - to me those are functions that I love to adjust depending on the tone I'm trying to create! The demo of the delay pedal didn't sound special to me in any way... like ElectricDruid says, this has nothing to do with the original company and feels like a shameless cash in on the original name... nostalgia time I guess?

similar to the Danelectro stuff.

If they can't be bothered to use slide or rocker switches, then they don't really care enough about brand nostalgia.

I won't rest until there's a Rhythm N' Sound reissue. With a modern power supply for lower noise.

Here's my newest Maestro fixation. Eddie Harris "Plug Me In."

The record shop across from my work has a copy of this on LP I'd like to buy. It was only recently that I learned Eddie Harris was a big proponent of running his saxophone through effects and uses the Maestro wind effects box, which had EQ's and octaves on switches, this along with wah wah and phasers is pretty consistent for him across at least 5 of his 70s albums that I've checked out.

I was expecting something more out-there from Eddie Harris so I went hunting down a rabbit hole of electric horns finally getting lost in the Gumbo Variations. Don't go there!
Anyway Maestro FX only work on horns. They're on the logo for heaven's sake!
:o
But before then I read some stuff on David Jackson and then found this...

There was also this mind-mangler of an album by Ernie Watts and Richard "Groove" Holmes, where Holmes runs his Hammond (!) through the Maestro, while Watts plays through the similar but maddeningly hard-to-find Fender Orchestration+ unit:

I don't know for whom these new Maestro pedals were designed/marketed, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't any of us...  :icon_eek:

its for the reddit-type consoomers that spend more time buying pedals than playing guitar.

you probably know the type, probably also collects something like funko pops

friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

Fair enough — as opposed to Reddit-lurking, chronically-impoverished types (such as myself!) who spend more time breadboarding circuits using $5 worth of components (which we then never actually box up) than playing guitar.  :icon_wink:

Why am I now imagining a line of Funko Pops of all the (in)famous pedal circuit designers? Glenn Snoddy? Mike Matthews? Gary Hurst? Keith Barr? Tom Oberheim? Fumio Mieda? (I mean, I might even buy those!)

More unobtanium...although Jimi probably has one.

A good friend of mine actually had TWO Orchestration Pluses (or is that Orchestrations +?) before selling one of them a couple years ago. :icon_eek: I have never used it personally, but I've played with him while he did once, and it had some fairly insane deep sub-octave content happening...

It bears noting that, while we here tend to think of processing 6-stringed instruments, many effects are really predicated on a monophonic input; especially when it comes to converting pitch into something else.  No palm-muting required with horns!

Strategy

I agree the Eddie Harris one is a bit like regular, "safe" groovy jazz with some unexpected horn fx interjections, doesn't quite go "wild." If you follow him through the 70s each subsequent album gets a little weirder than the previous. This one is probably my favorite, and I'm willing to bet the drum machine is a Maestro Rhythm King / Queen / Jester unit, as well

Here's some more funky Maestro album lore, haven't listened to this one for a while! Wish I'd bought the re-release album 10-15 years ago when it was commonplace, seems a bit pricey now!

My personal favourite is probably "Conversations Of Everything And Nothing" from the E.H. In The U.K. album, largely because I'm a hopeless sucker for Chris Squire's classic Ricky/Rotosound bass tone, and this piece is an absolute clinic on it. EH's Maestro unit is heavily to the fore as well...
