DIY Rotary Footswitch Like Quad Cortex?

Has anyone ever seen or done a DIY version of the double-duty footswitches / rotary encoders like on the Quad Cortex? I remember seeing the concept first on the TC Electronic G-System and seem to recall having seen it in other places that I can't remember.

A Google search yields that Neural DSP custom-made their own, and TC Electronic is certainly a large enough manufacturer to have done the same. I've also seen reports that some Quad Cortex users don't like them very much, so I'd wonder about their long-term reliability. It could still be fun to play with, though.
