Just so I don't stain the Orange Squeezer's good reputation, I found the source of most of my troubles...

I haven't touched this circuit for a month or so. I looked at it last night and realized that I had installed 2N3819 JFETs which have a different pinout than the 2N5457 does. (I thought they were the same, I guess I didn't double check) I'm surprised that it even worked! I subsituted the JFETs with some MPF102s for the moment. But I still have a fair amount of hiss when I turn up the 10K trimpot. I still suspect that those JFETs have too much gain.

I also did install an NE5532 low noise opamp, which did help lower the noise floor some.

I like how this circuit sounds, although I hear a little bit of distortion when I use my high output humbucker neck pickup. Or am I mistaking a heavily compressed sound for distortion? Anyone?

Are what I used for mine and I think they're lower gain that J201, but I liked and they worked fine for many boosters, and the OS, just a little less gain and different sounding.
So I have no trouble getting enough gain, or using 102's here and there...exp. to taste, like the sign says...
