Digital Effects Switching Patent

RG, you should get a kick out of this one...  :)

regards, Jack

ps:  There are also two Randall Smith "switch patents" pending as well...

Quotehmm...applicants name, Philpott, Justin M. Could it be the same as
I don't know.  :?:

I fail to see how this patent application describes much more than an alternate version of a DPDT switching system like in the Anderton EPFM book. No doubt the patent office will grant it though, as they are extremely liberal these days...

Well, at least one person has been reading the switching stuff at GEO 8-)

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Very true, Jack. The patents Office (in the USA an here in Australia) is totaly ignoring its responsibilities by just accepting anything & letting the courts decide the validity.

Brian Marshall

yeah, i want to know how the hell roland pattented asymetrical clipping.

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

Roland's US lawyers tried to hassle me over my optical theremin (the Frostwave A-Beam) but, thanks to 'prior art' advice from kind people on this board and elsewhere, I got them to give up.

I contacted Justin out of curiousity, and because I hadn't heard from him in a long time.

Yep, that is the Justin from effectronics. It turns out that he did the application as a semi-class-project in college, learning about patent application and prosecution. It worked - he's now a patent examiner. Apparently the work on that application was a good convincer in getting hired in the specialty.

The application is abandoned now, and as a result it's also a pretty solid prevention against anyone filing something similar.

Justin's a pretty smart and practical guy. We had a good exchange and I hope he'll get involved on line again. He has some unique experiences that I would find interesting.

Wow, cool. Maybe he can help the patent office shed it's laughing-stock status! For some wacky tales on patents granted to some absolute nonsense, check out:
