for tlo72's or 741's  or lm380'si got to shields electronics.  they are in my home town
for my 386's i will be goin with small bear from now on.
for most anything else i either go to shields or i askfor samples from the manufactuor

I use Mouser and Digikey for 99.5% of everything semiconductor. You just have to be careful and order exactly what you want. You can always compare the part numbers with the manufacturers datasheets if you can't tell the difference between the choices in the catalogs. It's the only way to fly. :)

Ansil-does the ask for sample thing really work?

I'm sort of nervous about doing it, it doesnt feel right, you see.

Yes, asking for samples works. I've gotten samples from Analog, National, TI, Maxim, etc... If you're a student, then go for it - they usually have a option on the form just for educational samples. They usually get sent out next day air or by some other insanely expensive method, so it's up to you to decide if getting $5 worth of chips is really worth it.

Now that I have a job I tend to order what I need from a distributor. If I'm developing something from the ground up, then I'll order an assortment of samples and see what works best. Remember, many ordinary devices (741, LM386, etc) may not be available as samples.

Thanks ansil, I'll try it.... should I be looking on the actual manufacturer, like philips or panasonic, or on a place like mouser?  I can't find anywhere to ask for samples on Phillips.

One more suggestion-try ebay, you never know when a lot of TL071's will show up... Like, for example, these 741s:

I order most of my stuff from Digikey but Mouser is great as well if you live in the US.

Samples do work if your a student or better yet part of a company. They love you then. I commonly order samples of stuff that I'm interested in trying out.
