I built an Odie from runoffgroove.com, and I reckon it's an excellent pedal.  Very nice overdrive sound.  I made 3changes to the original - a 4.7uF cap instead of 2.2uF in the first gain stage, for a little more "oomph", a 500k drive pot instead of the 250k, to allow for lower drive levels, and an adjustable low pass filter for a treble control (the one from the "Simple mods" page - a 10k pot in series with a .022uF cap).

Seems strange that I've never seen the Odie discussed in the forum.

Does anybody else like it?  Who has modified it?

You've just modded it!
Rock on, brother!  Glad you like it.

In the process of building it now (literally tonight). I'll let you all know what I think once its done (started late).
All I can say is that i've got high expectations based on what people are saying about it.
So its gonna be interesting, i'm sure i'll like it. Then i'll start on modifying it once its broken in a little :icon_twisted:

 Very nice overdrive sound.

I have not buit this one, was going to.
Is it more of an over drive, then a distortion?
I was under the impresion it was a distortin circuit.
I was hoping to use it for heavy metal!

I built a simplified version with no tone control - I liked it but well it's not my favourite one...Good circuit anyway...
Another great circuit from the fellas at ROG...
Done an' workin'=Too many to mention - Tube addict!

to be clear, although some people use the terms distortion and overdrive and fuzz to describe varying degrees of saturation, they are all the same basic effect. an overdrive is a distortion...

Man now I'm really confused :icon_eek: :icon_biggrin:

I've been playing for two year, and have only owned or used two pedals prior to making my own just recently.
A Digitech Grunge Which I think is metal and a wah. So far I just play in the basement to backing tracks. :icon_redface: :icon_rolleyes:
I have effects on my amp Vox Valvetronic but of course they don't say overdrive, fuzz or distortion.
I now know what a fuzz sounds like after building two of them..... and know what overdrive is from making a Valvecaster and a Gus boost to push my amp.
I just don't know what circuits here are good for heavy metal. Do you use a fuzz face or a big muff for metal? How about a Voodoo Labs overdrive with an extra clipping stage is that for metal? I just haven't had the exposure to different pedals in the past.

Thanks
Glen

you can get pretty thick on the muff, you might try a dr. boogie (fet emulation of the sound of a mesa boogie) or the brown sound in a box (evh-ish). They can get pretty "metal" like.

Another member of this forum was kind enough to suggest the Brown Sound in a box also!
I was also thinking of maybe Mark Hammers CHAOS METAL??    http://hammer.ampage.org/files/Chaos.gif

yeah, almost any of mark's designs can get deep into metal territory.

i just build an ODIE on the breadboard.  GREAT low gain sound, i love it!  now, what's more fun, perfboard, vero or etching a PCB?

biggy boy

For me I like etching my own boards wether they be ones I've down loaded from here, or ones that I have drawn up in Eagle.

I like PCBs for several reasons:

-They look cool and the process of making one is cool.

-I'm less likely to make a mistake and miss wire up components, because the wiring is already on the board. I just have to drop the components in.
As long as I draw (copy someones schematic) correctly in Eagle then my board is guarantied to be correctly wired up.

- With perfboard, I find it too easy to get wires in the wrong place, missing connections......
