 I am new here and have been chasing DS-1 Mods.Plenty of info available but the instructions have me confused, when they refer to C5 or R22 and there are no such references on a schematic how can I tell where what is?

Could be there's only one R22.
If you can get it's value it's easy to identify by it's color code.
You can tell otherwise which of the R22 valued resistors it is on the board by identifying it by what it's connected to.
If you can get your capacitor out, you can probably put a capacitor socket in? [typed too soon not fam too much with moddin Bosses].
Get it's value and you should be able to read that on the side of C5.
We're there any other descriptive terms on whatever info got you started about C5 and R22 ?
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

What I mean is that some mod instructions that I have say to change the value of C5,C7,C10,C11 to .01.Change C13,C17,C15 to.1.and change the value of R15,R17 to 100k-sort of like this see!-How do I identify thecaps and resistors refered to if there are no identifying numbers on the schematic or the board,is there a common method like for blueprints? :?:

The DS-1, along with all the other Boss pedals that I've seen, have the part numbers marked right on top of the circuit board near (or underneath) the part.  Every part is numbered with it's own individual number.  However, I haven't seen a schematic that has the corresponding part numbers marked on it.

Here's a list of the original values that I got from a DS-1 at work for the Keeley DS-1 mods:

C1 - 0.047µF
C2 - 0.47µF Electro.
C3 - 0.047µF
C5 - 0.068µF
C7 - 250pF Ceramic
C8 - 0.47µF Electro.
C9 - 0.47µF Electro. NP
C11 - 0.022µF
C12 - 0.1µf
C13 - 0.047µF
C14 - 1µF Electro.
R13 - 4K7
R14 - 2K2
R39 - 47K

Thanks Philip but the DS-1 board I have has markings for transistors and diodes but not for caps and resistors.I am looking at schematics for Keely mods and a written description as I described but I am having trouble identifing C1,C5,C12 and R13,R39 on the board, there are more than I listed but I think that describes the problem.

 Thanks again Phillip I didn't see the original values you had posted when I just looked at your reply.I think that will clear things up.I did most of the swaps already and replaced both clipping diodes with LEDs and the sound is already far better, but it seems that only one LED is recommended.I am impressed with how little it now changes the original guitar sound.I am looking for an Eric Johnson.SRV type of "Clean" distorted sound.I may do the LED swap to my Tubeworks 303 Smooth Overdrive as well,do you know of any mods for this pedal?Man this site is the Balls.

Well I've got the pedal up and going, good sounds with the exception of a bit of buzz that coincides with the seeing eye led lighting up.I used mostly RShack parts due to my limited supply onhand. All in All a much improved pedal. Thanks for all your help folks.

have you tried this..

it is pretty straight forward i modded the scheme based off of the instructions off of the keeley site.

KevinSTP

Yeah thats where I got my info but I have a little bit of buzz that tracks with the seeing eye LED.Its not noticeable when playing along with some music but it is when just playing guitar alone.I left the 47 pf cap off the diode because I din't have one,I have no idea what effect that might have?
"Looky What I Done Did"

Ansil

47pf cap rolls off the highs across the clipping diodes

KevinSTP

Thanks Ansil I figured as much I think I have a ceramic cap so I will try that.

hmm it might be possible you have some DC in the signal chain.. i could be wrong..   i haven't actually done the mod myself.  not his exact mod i did a couple of my mods to my friends ds-1's and i will be offernig some modded ds-1 pedals. but they will be louder and prouder than what anyone is doing now.  but i haven't heard about this particular side effect.  and i did take this straight off of keeleys site and draw it up... i will sleep on it and try to think about it.

KevinSTP

It seems as though my noises were due to my poor soldering work,Its been awhile since I've done this type of work and was using the 40 watt iron that I use on amps, and booggered up some of the copper traces on the board. But I have made repairs with copper strands.Loads of Coffee and a hot Iron what a combo!!!! This thing really has a lot of output is there a way to diminish that,I barely turn the level 1/3 of the way up .Would be nice to decrease the amount of distortion My Joe Barden pickups really push it hard.-  Kevin

yep you can change the resistor coming out of the transistor gain stage between the tranny and the opamp.  change back the drive r/c combo  or try uping.. hell its beenso long since i paid attention to what the original values were that i dont' remmber..  you should try the ds386

KevinSTP

 Ansil I hate to be a putz but you are talkin gibberish to me.How do I identify the transistor gain stage resistor you are talking about? And would that be Q1?What in Gods name is a r/c combo-sounds like something I used to get at Jack in The box. What was that last idea-You want me to up my WHAT? Thanks for the help too bad you don"t live near Cape Cod I could help you with the guitar work you want done, that is my real skill such as it is.

Thanks Ansil-I appreciate your help and patience, can't wait to get to the less gain mod.I have to be careful not to overcook the circut board anymore than I have or the bottom of the whole thing will be covered with strands of copper but hey if it works I'll be smilin.
