in the never ending quest for the strange. i was modding a bluzbomb and tried a low power mod.
    well , to make a long story short. you can make a very good sitar sound before the caps drain and the the IC gives you the middle finger
    you can mod any 4049 overdrive to do it w/ series res. to the power. but then it dies. so you get about 30 sec's of sitar then a dead pedal. i could not sustain the effect w/ a low parts count. but it's fun to play w/

Sounds cool!
I know you're looking for low parts count, but I guess you could use an lfo to lower the resistance long enough to give it a quick boost every 30 seconds or so.
