2N3904 effects?

I found a store here where I got 2N5088 and 2N3904!  Next time, I'll try ordering online. I spent a lot of money travelling from one store to another and ended up with nothing. Even before, I know that I can order online but afraid that the shipping cost might be higher.  :?

I found a couple or three DIY effects that has a 2N3904 tranny somewhere before but can't remember it and where. Seems to me they were a compressor and/or a booster or a distortion.

Can anyone point them out to me?

Green ringer can be built with a couple 3904's and one 3906.
LOTS and LOTS of circuits I have run across either use tham or can use them.

You can build the Rocket fuzz, great pedal, sounds nice with 2N3904. I replaced the trimpot for a 2k2 resistor.

I think you can build a tube screamer with them. Also maybe a highway 89?

The 2N3904 is like the 2N5088, but with less gain (MUCH less I think). You can build almost anything that uses a NPN transistor with them. Try to find the BC549C, they have lots of gain.

A good stock for experimenting would include 2N3904, 2N3906,  2N5087, and 2N5088. (and maybe 2N5089 too) Than you have 2N4401 and 2N4403, and the list goes on forever.

You could use 2N3904s in an EA Tremolo, the earlier version of Joe Davisson's Easy Drive, Howie's Metal Simplex, and many, many others.
The only bad thing about them is that they can be noisy in high gain circuits.

Don't forget Astable multivibrators, driving LEDs and using LDRs you can get ultrasimple tremolo.

And with 3904's you basically have 2n2222's, which to me is another very common one.

I like the 2N3906 and 2N2222 for PNP and NPN Fuzz Face circuits. The 2N2222 sounds a little better, I think. Or it could just be the particular values I used in my fuzz build were better suited for the 2N2222.

EH Booster or LPB derivitave...nice ckt. EZ Fireup and many uses.
