DOUBLE POSTS - Please read :)

Hello everyone,

A couple of times daily I try to scan all the new messages to wipe out double postings. The double posts come from the architecture of the forum program combined with TCP/IPs best attempts to insure data makes it from one place to another.

If the server is under a large load at the moment you hit the submit button, it may take a few seconds to process the data and during that time, your browser may try to send the data again just to make sure it got there. When that happens, you get a double post.

If you hit submit and it seems to be taking longer than it should, I would appreciate it if you could please let the system take you back to the topic you just posted in (just wait 5 seconds after the "your post has been entered" screen, or click the "return to topic" on that screen), and check to see if your post was entered twice.

If the system posted your message twice (or three times ;)), please use the edit button on one copy of the message and change it to say "double post". Check that box and hit submit.

That makes it easy for me to just do a search.

Thank you everyone! :D

After using BBSs for over 20 years and the Internet for 14, this is still just about the best  forum I have ever seen, and it's all thanks to the users. Give yourselves all a pat on the back for a job well done! 8)

Take care,

I plead guilty  , but I only post again when I get a "can't find page" error after submitting a post.   When this happens I submit again.  I suppose I should look first to see if the post was successful fiirst.

Please don't anybody worry about this. :D The fault lies 100% in the software. Posters shouldn't have to fix system errors.

If it happens.... Oh well... it happens. C'est la vie. I would much rather see people worry about finding that next transistor with the right Hfe for the next project. ;)

Aron will be migrating to a newer version of the forum software at some point and hopefully that will help too.

Thank you again to everybody! 8)

UPDATE:

Thanks to Bill_F who pointed out that there is no "delete this post" option. Sorry, I thought there was and I don't see the normal menus on my account.

Anyway, if everybody could just change the duplicate(s) to read "double post", I would appreciate it very much because that I can just do a search to find them.

Thanks! :D

Is this related?

when I post then click Back to see the thread again hopefully to see my post I don't see it.

But when I click refresh it comes up.

Maybe this would be worth publishing as a hint to people who might be tempted to click Back and click Submit again?

just my $0.02 ..

Thanks George. :)

I'm sure that happens as one source of doubling. I'm in the habbit of using the back button to make my browsing faster and I've just commited myself to clicking on the "Building your own stompbox" link at the top after reviewing a post I just made.

In the next couple of weeks I should have a little chunk of code done that scans the message base for exact duplicates and that will save everybody from all this sillyness. :)

Take care,
-Peter
