Check out the two versions of Little Gem at runoffgroove.com, Pale Blue Box by Brett Robinson (search for his name here,  i can't remember his site) and several amps in the articles in GGG. All of them are low-wattage amps suitable for practice.

I built the Little Gem. It has two controls, vol and gain. You can get a decent drive from it. Also, there are only 6 components including the 386 chip. It can power a headphone up those bid speakers without any issues. Highly recommended for easy build.
Oh yeah!

I found the ax84 on google last night... the p1 looks easy, and they sell a kit... probably a good idea for a first amp to buy a kit.  My first stomp box was a kit.  thanks a lot.  There is enough here to get me started :D
