OT silent butler

I borrowed someone's (can't remember who?) idea of buying round silent butlers on ebay and picked up a nice silver plated one with a horse engraved on it.

My question concerns keeping the silver from tarnishing. Can I clear coat the silver with polyu to keep it from tarnishing?

It could tarnish under the layer of coating and that would make it hard to polish...I think it looks cool with the patina on it, and you'd be havin that magic Genie in a bottle Voo Doo werkin for ya !!!
