I'm quite interested in building a FireFly low-wattage tube amp, but what's holding me back is construction of the metal chassis.

People on this forum have built them; what did you do for a chassis?

I can make a nice cabinet in my wood shop, but about all I am set up to do with metal is drill round holes.

well i built mine in electronics class at school.  i got hold of a bit of aluminium and cut a big rectangle out of it, then i scored down the edges, and made cuts in the side and bent them up on the magna-bend (great invention) then i scored down the very edge of those sides to make tabs for riveting, then i bent the other sides up and riveted them to the other sides.

in the end it looked like a rectangle.

cheers

Have a look at the "Steel Studs" article at GEO. Depening on the size, a 2x4 or 2x6 steel stud works pretty well for a tube amp chassis.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I used a surplus modem chassis ($5) for mine. It had the added bonus of coming with a pcb with a bunch of cool parts in it. Check the "post your bench pics" thread. The Firefly is sitting right in the middle of my bench.

hey erik i have a old modem that you might be able to get it into.  also you could do it with a DD box.

i did my last one with a piece of aluminum from Donald  and it was wicked.

Hey Doug,

I was wondering if you could take some close up photo's of your firefly?  :D  I looks really cool from a distance  8).
What are the measurements of the chassis?

I am re-vamping my site right now and will be putting up close up photos as part of that. Since you mentioned it, I'll include the measurements of the chassis. The site mods are almost complete. Give me a day or two.

It's 13" X 6.5" X 1.5".

Okay, I guess the easiest way is to take a box from a derelict piece of equipment, and around here I have a bounty of such.

If I don't want to spend $25 on a Greenlee punch, how shall I make the 1" holes for the tube sockets?

There's a Unibit that gets that big that I'd love to have, but finances do not yet permit....
