I'm looking for some good beginner books for a buddy of mine.  He needs something to explain what everything does, why it's put where, etc...

Thanks.

I started with Craig Anderton's Electronic Projects for Musicians (EPFM). Great book. But, that only really seems to scratch the surface as far as explaining exactly what everything does and why it's put where.

Unless your buddy is willing to weed through a lot of "Electronics 101" type stuff, I don't think he'll have much luck finding any basic analog electronics books that are geared specifically towards stompoxes. He might actually be better off on the internet.

Justin Philpott has some good beginner stuff on his web site: http://www.j.philpott.com/effectronics/ (try the links for "Beginners" and "Design"). Your buddy could also try reading stuff like R.G.'s The Technology of... series, hanging out in a place like this for a while, and then actually building a few circuits himself.

Experience is the best teacher.

I'd recommend going to barnes and noble to the electronics section and getting one of the "what each component does" books, or something similiarly simple.
