After readin on the discussion about getting that metal sound...I got to thinking one might use a "MidScooper" type Equeing ckt that scoops Mids [doh] at a preset level, [seems this would be simpler and less knobs for sure than an EQ build] of better yet has a small amount of control over the 'where' [frequencies affected] or 'how much' what amount of cut a Freq band would have.
I'm not the breadboarder [I need a surfboard to surf thing] type guy just yet, however it just seems I had the urge to post this...it's an interesting area for exploration and application...I'm sure there's must be some existing ckts around that do this..

did this, its on my site, i fyou wish to check it out, uses a switch to go between happy and sad eqing.

Does anyone know at what point the appropriate "mid" range would even be defined?  I mean, I assume it's a matter of taste, but where would you start shooting for?

Also, (and I'd post this back on the other message but I don't seem to remember which one it was [nothing is jumping out at me at least]) but if somebody does go the heavy distortion plus scooped-mids route, I'd really heavily suggest adding a compressor, at least if you plan on playing any of those "chuggy" palm mutes that seem stereotypical in the style the original post was refering to  - in my experience, scooping the mids and rolling on some more bass for that sort of tone, something about it makes the palm mutes louder than regular strumming a lot of times, (it's odd) often times to the point where it sounds wierd or distracting and isn't really compensatable by playing with a different touch.  Of course that might just be because I almost always use the bridge pickup.  (If I could ever get a working tone out of the neck pickup . . . )

hmmm Interesting concept....  What about changing the eq on the fuzz for 2 pots:  Bandwidth and Boost/Cut......Seems pretty simple Looking @ the scheme on Ansils site....

1k to 1.5k is the freq to cut to tighten up your sound.

Oh BTW it was my "The never ending search....continues" post! :D

Ive been working on an updated tone stack design thingy for the Obsidian...I call it the Obqueliser!!!

I was thinking of adding parametric eq or a tweeked amp eq(Im looking @ the vox one in Duncans TSC as it seems to have excellent mid cut :))

I'll let you know how it goes!

Doug Hammond's Sweet 16 has a passive mid-notch after a dual mu-amp distortion.  It works pretty good.  I added a switch to by pass it for the straight tone.   8)

ALSO FOR A NICE trick before distortion use a 1:1 isolation transformer its freq response is 300hz to 5khz.  interesting pre shaper with no need for an input cap
