I download lots of music, I use the Kazaa at least once in a week.

I use KMD (Kazaa Media Desktop) to 'try bands out'. If I like a band, I support them by buying their CD ;)

I realized a few months ago that Kazaa and Direct Connect were triggering my collector mentality way too much. I found myself downloading stuff just because it was there, and spending too much time monitoring it. I don't look at either one more than once every couple of months now.

I used to use Kazaa a bit, but I only downloaded music that I have bought in the past to learn for band gigs.  Just simpler whipping up a cd instead of copying from cassette and records.  I don't use it anymore tho.
Peace!

Check out Overnet.  You can download full albums in .rar or .zip.

dont download zipped files much, as you cant tell whats in em till you open them... which means more trojans fo' yo' asses!

I haven't had any problem downloading RARs.  I've actually bought more CDs since I've started downloading than I did before.   :?

Guys, you do not want to see my girlfriend's part of the HDD for MP3's she downloads. 4 GIGABYTES! over 2500 mp3s! That's insane!

Actually... a zip file is a passive file, similar to mp3.  There is no harm that can be done in simply downloading a zip and seeing what is inside of it.  There is possible harm if you execute any files inside the zip though, or if trickery is involved to make you think a file is a zip file when it is really something else... like naming it "files.zip.exe" and then relying on stupid Windows to hide the extension so it looks like "files.zip", then you double click on it and "ka-boom".

Anyway, you get the picture

Firewall! Very useful. And, you can set up filters in kazaa to stop .something.exe files.

I have 4.30Gb of MP3, 1219 files. I have almost half in cds, but I like to hear them in my pc, without the cd. And I have some kinds of music that you don't find easy in cds, like lives, demos, covers and songs from independent bands.

Chris R

you can download live / legal shows using bit torrent from

www.sharingthegroove.org

basically just the "taper friendly" bands.

Yeah, but bit torrent are slower than Kazaa.

I used to download mp3s all the time but after a while it took a back seat to porn.I only hope the porn industry dosen't start going after downloaders

amckinley100

As with most other people (seemingly) I am a former filesharer.
I don't use Kazaa anymore since it is too hard to find anything except porn.
I don't use anything else, because I have more than enough music on my PC (18+gigs!!!! 4700 files)  However, 16+gigs are ripped directly from CDs (being a student away from home I'd rather not transport 150odd cds around - insured at £15 per CD replacement value...that's a lot of beans, and my room insurance won't cover it)

I have to say though...i truly believe that MP3 has led me to purchasing more CDs than not - there's nothing quite like holding an album in your hands...

I think a large part of the problem is the fact that we don't yet really have an outlet here in the UK for legal downloads - if I downloaded a track illegally, it was usually because it is a deleted track, or otherwise unavailable on the commercial market (eg. live bootlegs).  And i'm not going to spend £15 on a compilation album for those hard to find tracks, when there's only one track on the album you're interested in

Just my tuppence worth...

I use DC++, a clone of Direct Connect to download anything i need. I never liked Kazaa, eDonkey/Mule, etc.
Cut it large, and smash it into place with a hammer.

yano

I use Kazaa Lite K++, its spyware free, and if you're smart about it, you can avoid viruses easily.
