Keeley mods for metal zone?

Are there any schematics floating around for any of the Robert Keeley mods, especially the one for the metal zone?  I have a feeling that he might keep it under raps but...

I really want to do it but I can't afford US$75 (not that it's at all unreasonable, I'm just poor).  I'm also not sure that paying for all the metal film caps would really make that much of a difference... but that's beside the point.

If anyones seen them or know what they might be, hook a brother up.

I'm sure he changes out one of the diodes with a red LED, as he does with the DS-1. That's probably at least part of his mod. And adds a 47pf cap across the diodes to smooth it out a bit because the Metal Zone has some obnoxious harsh clipping to it.

Yeah the metalzone on my pedalboard needs modding. It's too buzzy. I seriously need to make a nicer distortion like a DS-1 clone with a few mods :D

I'll bet that replacing some of the caps and adding the RED LED and 47pF cap etc. will make a HUGE change in the metal zone. They are hard core harsh~!!

You can do these mods yourself I'm sure. The parts would only cost $7-10 at the most~!!

I'll see what I can find out for you.

I'm also interested in any mods for the metal zone, i really like mine, but it's true that whe i turn the treble past 12 o'clock, it becomes really harsh.

By the way, Arn, have you seen my home page? I promised you some pics, so there they are!!

Marcos - Munky

Hey Arn, could you send it to me too?

Paul Marossy

I think it must be how you EQ it. I have never got a buzzy sound out of mine. Only nice smooth soaring leads.

smoguzbenjamin

Any killer settings you recommend, Paul? I keep trying to make my MT-2 sound nice and smooth where it's harsh and sweet enough but not buzzy :?

And keep failing

Here is how I have mine set:

Level 10:00 o'clock
Low 1:00 o'clock
Hi 8:00 o'clock
Middle 1:00 o'clock
Mid Freq 3:00 o'clock
Dist 11:00 o'clock

How it sounds also depends on your amp, how you EQ the amp, if you use the effects loop or not, the guitar you use, the pickups it has in it, how you set the tone control(s) on your guitar, etc., etc.

I like a darker, smoother tone. I HATE shrieking treble in my face.

smoguzbenjamin

Yeah, with the treble turned up the MT-2 seems to drown out any pitch in a note, just squealing treble

Cool.  Thanks Arn.  I',m going to have to give it a go.

By the way to give my two cents, I do like the sound of the Metal Zone... but also can't resist tearing apart pedals.    The are the two versions out there, one with the stacked pots and one without.

Paul Marossy

Oh... there's a version without the 4-band EQ? That would indeed sound different.

Gringo

The one i have is the old one, with the two dual pots (bass-treble, midrange-mids). I have found my sweet spot, but hey, if it could be  tweaked a little to enhance it...

Starting from Paul's setting I have now spent 4 hours tweaking and turning and it is now heavenly! Nice and crunchy but still clear enough for a smooth tone. When I decide to stop being lazy I'll post em if you like ;)

I would think the mods to both the SD-1 and the DS-1 could be incorparated since it has both kinds of clipping diodes, plus 2 inline Ge's.   8)
