I tried the data sheets but my comprehension is less than clear.
 What can this be used for...I have one in my SS phazer...
  I didn't see anything mentioned about 'amplifier'...what does it do?

It is an opamp whose gain is controlled by the current into pin 5 on the chip. The other main difference is the output is a current.
