What program do you use to create MP3 files? I would like to do some sound clips, but I don't think that I have the software to create those types of files...

Ace High MP3

http://www.mp3-recorder.net/mp3recorder/

It's real simple, and I used it to rip some records.

Another good one that I have used once in a while is Cool Edit.

That's what I use: dBpowerAMP Music Converter

But this program only converts WAV to MP3 or vice versa, so you still need a some recording program. Cool Edit is a good one, but it was acquired by Adobe and is now called Adobe Audition

But the old version (Cool Edit 2000) is still available on the net, for example here.

I use Apple iTunes on both platforms (mac and pc).

So, can you record a guitar sound clip directly to your computer with any of these programs?

MarkB

best to record it as a WAV then compress it..
PM or email me off-forum and I'll dig up some good tools for you.

I can record .WAV files from Windows. What I can't do is compress it...
I'll send you a PM.

Hi Paul,

if what you need is to convert a .wav to an .mp3, I suggest using LAME.  It is very good and free!  Here is the link:

http://lame.sourceforge.net/

The windows front end to encode wav files is:

http://winlame.sourceforge.net/

Cheers,
Stephane.

Now there's a name! LAME?

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Ace High MP3 goes DIRECTLY to mp3. Your line in goes right to mp3, whatever compression, no extra steps. Real small program, too.

I've been using this awhile and it works nice. It does the LAME MP3's. It also has other codecs you can download to convert files other than WAV.

I use Musicmatch Jukebox to convert files. Works well enough.

I just tested out the LAME plugin for winamp with good results. I was able to get a 48meg file down to about 4 megs before it started to sound too crappy. At it's highest quality setting I got  about a 6 meg file that almost  didn't suck. I generally can't stand mp3 audio *quality* and I was able to listen to it without smashing anything or getting nauseous. If you are just doing short clips, you should be able to get some decent results at reasonable file sizes.

As a unix guy I have to throw my support behind LAME as well. It has work very well for me.

Wow

Thanks for all those links! I will be busy the next few evenings.

I'll throw in another vote for dbPowerAmp, it's a frontend for LAME so you don't have to mess with commandline parameters if you don't want. Very easy to use, and there is a freeware version I believe that will do anything you need to in the way of basic mp3 conversion.

Again, it includes LAME as I recall, so check it out  :D
