...solder smoke always goes TOWARD your face?  Is it because it's sooo toxic?  because it tastes bad?  I have a little DC fan hooked up running off a wall wart to blow it away but in the winter it's too cold in the basement for a fan...

Funky but it sure works.
You have the fan, that's a good start.
Can get fans here and there. it's a cooling fan 4'' I think.
If I had it to do again I would build a shroud around the fan.
I duct taped flexible 4'' dryer exhaust tube to the fan on one side and stuck the other side through a hole in a Med. Large box.
The exhaust side of the fan got a little more flexi hose then even larger hard plastic tubing which releases the fumes in the other room [ I wish outside] which is a sturage room....wash your hands after touching anything in the basement...
The Tube is a nice grey brown color at it's mouth, I've had countless hours of Solder msmoke go through it.
I also installed a light, and used to use clamping methods for the work, but soon realized the myriad positions would require extra hands, and I adapted quuickly to the excellent {IMO} method of simply clamping the soldering Iron {I stick the Iron through a brick's hole, and use a special wedge to clamp it tight to the brick...actually the brick sits atop an upside down frying pan, the boards need  elbow room and this gets the tip up.
That's it except use a 1/2 inch tube fastened so the opening is right next to the tip and use a flexible hospital tube...but I tried...you need an induction fan for that to get enough flow...
Anyway instead of letting the fumes just go where they want..build another filter box...cut it out so it's a frame for air filters you can soil, and run the exhaust into there.
That smoke really got to pesterin me, since I installed the Deluxe' Soldering Station..lol...assembling circuits is much more pleasant!

It could be that your breath is sucking it in, oh and you might be right above the soldering work to see what you are doing ;)

Ah, you need a hot air blower! but seriously, sucking might work better.

It's the same principle that makes cigarette smoke head straight for the nostrils of the person in the room most likely to be bothered by it.

Put six smokers and one non-smoker in a room, have one of the smokers light up, and watch where the smoke goes.

It's freakin' uncanny.

I know what you mean.... I would rather chug chocolate mayonnaise soda than smell tobacco, but somehow that smoke seems to find me.

If your'e in a cold room there is a flow created by body heat that draws air [smoke] into it.

It does it just to bug you.

I guess I have been soldering so long now that I rarely notice any kind of odors or smoke when I solder. I don't have much of a problem with smoke when I'm soldering.

Hal

its the same thing with the toast and the butter...

Gotta have my fan on or it gets behind my glasses and gives me a serious eye hit. Ouch.

I remember when I must have been a freshman in HS purposely taking a "hit" of solder smoke on a dare when "high" on another kind of smoke. I don't reccomend that to anyone.

I even remember putting one of those old aluminum keys into an electrical socket underneath my bed and getting the shock of a lifetime (maybe 5-6 yrs. old).

I don't know why I typed the latter paragraph, but, solder smoke doesn't bother me much. I like it. Especially the Kester!!

For those keen bunnies out there, here's what I've got on my workbench at work.

However, "low-noise" is not a term I would associate with this product!

Xlrator, you're not alone.  As a kid I zapped myself many times.  In fact, the light in my bedhead should never have been legally sold;  No protection whatsoever!  I was just reaching around the back of the bed one day and WHAMMO!
