Okay, I figured out a cheap sinewave generator based on the XR2206.

In its simplest form it can create a sine wave through the audible frequencies at a steady amplitude.

With small mods, it can go way outside those frequencies, and provide triangle and square waves.

I've built one up and it works great on 9V; all I have to do now is draw out the schematic for others to enjoy. Once I do that, I'll make it available.

Yes, I'm slowly converting to the XR2066 just because it can run of 9v and give me more waveforms in a more stable way than the dual OA pattern.  It's also not that more expensive, given that the dual OA you buy is a high quality $2 one.
