Hard drive pedal?

No, not a HARD drive pedal, a hard-drive pedal. This may sound weird. Can I use an empty hard drive to make a pedal? I got one open and empty. It seems shallow, but it's long and wide. If I spread out the curcuit board to minimize height off the board, do you (anyone) think it'll work? Anyone have experience with this?

It won't look pretty, but I don't think this one is meant to...

Samuel

might not be deep enough for a stomp switch, tho....

Gringo

Too shallow, but you could try with cd drive enclosures.
Cut it large, and smash it into place with a hammer.

I can whip out a perfectly sized top and sides from a sheet metal amp scav.
Take your marking templates { I use the door to a VCR to make the depth marks etc],
well the one piece I use let me cheat as it is easy to get two parallel sides that are already the right size...where the air slots start.
anyway the part I like is cold chiselling the bend lines. I have an 'Eastern technique that involves a large hammer, Cold chisel, even strokes, and driving the corners of the chisel [don't even try putting a chisel into a peice of metal shee going flush flat across] in alternat front back 'sewing' the bend lines into the metal quickly.
I plan on 'wrapping' the sides in wood, like a picture frame...cool thing is they are 2-3 item boxes !!! I think they're cool looking as is actually till you get up close...lol, they are alot of work, That's what I like about them.
anyway they are pretty easy to drill, and come in the larger sizes...order delivery on one is about 25 minutes !!!

this isnt' a hard drive is it.??????

yes it is. An old one, BTW. Newer ones tend to be more shallow.

Printer selector boxes make good enclosures (those boxes you use to switch between two computers and only one printer)

My Splitter-Blend and Purple Peaker prototypes use one of those boxes.

The Purple Peaker has the top:

and the Splitter-Blend has the bottom:

Don''t know if you've seen my thread, but it relates to some pretty interesting ideas for cheap enclosures and has pics. http://www.diystompboxes.com/sboxforum/viewtopic.php?t=20290&highlight=
It's people like us who contribute to dead fx pedals selling on eBay for what they'd cost new!

mannn hahahha I was thinking delay with a hard drive....::sigh:: hahahaha

travissk

hm... digital delay with a 120GB hard drive...

Alternatively, one heck of a loop sampler. With compression, it could go for days... and days... and days....

Peter Snowberg

Even without compression and using 48K / 16 bits, a 120GB HD would have a period of 20.8333 hours.   That's quite a loop!

Take care,
