You guys/gals, have any suggestions on distortion boxes to build that would sound good with a Marshall JCM800?

Ed G.

You sure you need distortion or just a booster?
I never owned a Marshall, but Steve Vai and Satriani like the DS-1.
Zakk Wylde likes a Boss overdrive, don't remember which one.
Personally, I hate the Boss DS-1, even modded to Keeley's specs, but I never played it through a Marshall. It could be an entirely different beast in that configuration.

Whoops, I forgot I was looking for an octave-up/distortion pedal.

I use a Metaltronix M-1000 head which is roughly a hot rodded JCM 800 (from what I understand) and I don't need a distortion in front of it.  That thing has waaaay too much gain for me.  I am currently using a DIY Germanium Fuzz Face (with the Oskar Bruil tone pot) for a lead boost.

There are 2 JCM 800's floating around where I live and neither one of those guys use any pedals and they both play some pretty heavy music.

What exactly are you looking for? Distortion or Boost?

My mind kind of spaced out when I first posted, I was looking for an octave fuzz.

I have no suggestions for distortion, but as for octave up, Dean Hazelwanter has a pitch shifter than can go up or down an octave, plus it has some other features. His schematic, and some PCB's, are available at generalguitargadgets.com under modulation effects.

This is going to rejected by a few people, but I like the RM Octavia a lot more than the Tyco octave circuit.  Yeah, the Tyco is wilder, with high-pitched tones.  (So does scratching your fingernails on a blackboard.)  To me, the RM, especially without too much boost, sounds more musical.  Perfect for that "Purple Haze" moment.

goes up or down an octave? I emailed JD asking him if it did this, he told me it didn't go that far, maybe a 5th up or down was as far as it could go.

but if you've actually built one that can go up or down a full octave, I'm excited!
