The most successful Dist + build to date !!!
I sure do like the Saturation Control !!!
Opens up, brightens, smooths, makes more punchy, less 'constrickty', sound come out. Very Very Nice!!!
I ended up with the 'twangy bite' version of this mod.
It still does what it did before, which is less output, more intermodulation presence, with the constricty-grit.
Basically the pedal is just wondersome...only took a while for me to find it. This is one bite I took long ago, and have been chewing on, on and off   for ... years?...and now finally getting some flavor I [really] like out of it. what a machine.
Sounds very much like Dist+. [I well remember the tones from the ochre one I bought in '78, and...well,,,'lost' in like '81, that I always cherished].
this one is a 5534 driving an NTE GeDiode>, and a B/C diode in a NTE158, twangy bite Saturation Control [what a Nice thing to have on a Dist+]. Very low noise and overall well behaved.
No worries about guitar vol gain rolloffs...limited mileage there, the way 'things are configured here, I get a somewhat reduction of clipping saturation followed fairly quickly by mud entering, I will have to refrain from reducing guitar volume below about 7....for the most part...sometimes a little mud spattered after the end of a song can be refreshing counterpart to the PA announcements advertising the bar has ketchup.
Box is marked COMP [lol...it compresses] letters are white/recessed in leather, has TB/with indicator, is a 3 knob Dist+ in multi-color, leather clad RACO, ...room for the Battery INSIDE the box these days, I'm trying to do away with 'dangling participles"...Its a really fine stand alone Distortion Unit.

Pete, you were trying all sorts of diodes, right? You settled on a Ge diode, and a Ge 158 as a diode. How much different sounding was it from two Ge diodes? I haven't tried using a ge tranny as a diode in that ckt. It is a great circuit. Simple, overlooked, thought of as a beginner's build, but it does have a unique sound. I've been using one almost as long as I've been playing, and still love the sound.

I'm finally finding out it CAN be a hot box. I mustafa tried this thing 20 differnt ways before this.
No I'm not done testing diodes. Or testin the unit. In fact I was testin that one not 20 min ago.
I had a chance to open the amp up some today, I'm always doing recombinant chains, the Dist + is one bad little box. I like it, simple Dist., however with something extra the box really shines, I like that it does what it does with others and by itself...sounds pretty DG so many different ways I wouldn't want it tied to just one other, does great jobs working out of it's little box.
I'm really impressed with the intense Fuzz Feedback I can reliably get with it. Very late 70's.
Can get smooth, but I would not look for anything close to pristine from it. Basically does like from Muted OD to intense Fuzz, roll anything back so far and some mud may appear.
Anyways unloading tension with this works quite well, Blue Cheer, Ac/Dc etc. being the order of the day. I was gettting some pretty decent tunings from the MP [FF] and the DIST+, [well the usual reverb], increasing the output of the FF is like turning up the burner on a well Q'd high end sizzle sauce.  SMOKES !!! FIRE !!! Amp compression to where you can't tell right where the sustains ending and the attack's beginning depending on strength/frequency...just barrelloads of fun!!!
I do want to try many different diode types in here...Tuned well for power, Still,  I want to try some different tunings on the 'exhaust', just to see what that does. It was breathing fire today though....he he
