Thanks dubs and Mark for quite an educational thread.   One thing I DO notice about my heladito is that the effect isn't as intense as say, my CE-2 can be made to be.  

I think I'm gonna be reviewing my build pretty soon ...

I think those are just large-diameter through-hole-plated .. errm ... holes. Through-hole-plating means the solder ends up not just sitting on the 'surface' of a joint but also in the same plane as the PCB, making the joint stronger. I'm a little surprised more manufacturers don't do it as it really adds only a little to the cost of the PCBs (5->10%?) and reduces the chance of torn pads when doing repair / mod work - something I considered important as most of the IFs I sell have at least one mod on them, and also I've been tweaking the design through changing resistor values over time.
