On the subject of Fiber Optics - that's a great idea. You can illuminate the fiber with an LED and send light wherever as long as you don't bend the cable too sharp (critical angle). A good bit of the lighting cable is end glow but they do make side glow cable which means the whole cable lights up. Much like the neon on the bottom of cars that was already mentioned. Here's a link with a good selection - I've never ordered from them but their prices seem to be pretty reasonable. Don't be fooled by the prices on the illuminators (for bigger projects not stompboxes) you can make one for A LOT cheaper.
