This is from Anderton's book entitled "Do-It-Yourself Projects For Guitarists". It's really simple to build and use. I apologize for the kinda large file size (429K), I'll have try to make it a little smaller somehow.

This should help give you an idea of the input impedance of any effect pedal and how it should be treated in a chain of pedals, and why things don't work quite as you anticipated...
