has any one used any of these speakers for a little gem?

I've used a wide variety of small speakers with 386 based amps and you really can't tell much by looking at the pictures. There is an extremely wide variance in response. Small speakers do MUCH better when placed in a box.... even a small one.

They might be nice for convenience, but if you want anything decent tone wise, try an 8 inch speaker or larger. 12s sound wonderful with a 386 amp. :D

The only advice I could give would be that bigger is better in this case.

Try every speaker you can. :D

I had the small one in my Little Gem. Sounds cool, but a bigger speaker is better.

Jensen has a 6" speaker in their Mod series. It is 4 Ohms.
I tried a single out of the cab with a smokey and was impressed with the volume. I think if your looking at a 6" size these are worth looking into.

NO!!!!! Absolutely not!!! That's what we have millions of in our electronics class, and they're all CRAPPY. They sound like crap, and distort tons. They don't even have screw holes to mount them. If you want, I have two pairs of real small alnico speakers. One pair has those alnico magnets that look thike the Jensen P8R, and the other has magnets in the style of a Jensen P15N, circlar magnets complete with bell covers. All four of them are 4 inch speakers, and are in great condition. If you want a cheap and real nice sounding pair of speakers, just PM me.

I have a pair of decent 4" speakers rated for 50 watts in a closed back cabinet. I think they sound pretty good. I probably got lucky...

Those are terrible. That's what I'm using in my Peanutty Amp (a peanut jar with 386-based amp and that little speaker). It sounds like *ss.
Pardon my poor English. I'm American.

hahaha ok I dont think ill get one.

I have some little ones at my house, but I was looking for something good to put inside the bear.  I'm not really worried about tone, just volume.  I'll....figure something out :-D.  I dunno.

If you want pure volume, A few of those those (you know like wired like in a stack) will give nice volume. I'm not sure my speakers would fit in yor teddy (I've seen it before, but I didn't connect you to it at first).Try that or a small driver, or other high efficiency speaker. No wait, better yet, get one of those computer speakers with huge magnets, and run it through two of those. That'll give nice volume.

Best speakers I got for my Ruby were out of knackered Compaq workstations. Just over 2", 4ohms, rated 10 watts, huuuuge magnets on em. Got 8 of em out of a local dump. Now have a full "stack" with a Ruby and two 4x2's  8)

Noo, I can't let this stay.  The teddy was Tumpasaurus's.  I'm totally stealing the idea, though :-D.

edit-Tourchy-Good Idea!  I have some old JBL/Compaq computer speakers that I can rip up.  They're on the larger end, but will probably be good.

Do you mean something like this: http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/kompshall/speaker.jpg

That's taken out of Compaq computer and it works great for it's size. Needs a box though (well almost all speakers need a box anyway).

Too bad the newer Compaqs don't have those... They have smaller and crappier speakers.

Torchy

Same magnet etc but these are a little over 2" round, not elliptical. The only markings on them are a compaq label (no usable info) and the speaker rating. Cracking speakers though  :)

Yeah... No usable info on mine either but works fine. That magnet assembly is probably that big because of magnetic shielding. That means I can take my combo ( http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/kompshall/kompshall1.jpg ) near my computer monitor or put it on top of the TV and it will not screw the picture. :)

OH MANNNN

the "turbo boost" in the background goes to 11 :-D

Heh... When I installed the knob to the pot in that one I put it in a bit wrong angle. I noticed it almost immediately but decided to keep it that way and do the 11 thing. 0 and 10 are quite nicely on the opposite sides. The circuit itself is nothing more than an op-amp booster/preamp with a flat frequency responce. I use it to drive my computers line-in when toying with software FX.

Back to speakers... Go ahead and try the ones you have. Many speakers cannibalized from old equipment can give some good tones. Some of them don't but that's usually a not very big loss. The tones you get are mostly not your basic "vintage mojo" tones, but usually intresting anyway.

Hmmm... I seem to still have the soundsample of my small amp with the Compaq speaker on my web space.

Here: http://www.hut.fi/~pjunno/temp/kompshall/kompshall.mp3

The tone control on the amp was bit on the dark side when I recorded that... I tend to like darkish tones. (My playing also tends to be horrible. :))
