NPN fuzz face questions

GGG makes a mess in caps value!
is it 0.1uF (as in text files) or 0.01uF (as in images)?

do anyone ever done NPN fuzz face with two 2N3904?
do they work fine?

Ciao! Dunque, l'output cap del Fuzz Face originale dovrebbe essere un 10nF, ma in molti casi lo si trova da 0.1uF, per "scaldare" un po' il tono. Nella scelta del condensatore, comunque, tieni in considerazione anche il valore del potenziometro del volume. I due infatti creano un circuito RC passa banda, ed agiscono insieme sul taglio delle alte frequenze. Probabilmente le due scelte più equilibrate sono:

- cap: 0.01uF, pot: 500K log; oppure
- cap: 0.1 uF, pot: 100K log (raccomandabile per diminuire l'impedenza d'uscita).

Poi nulla vieta che se ti piace un suono molto brillante fai 0.01 e 100, se molto scuro 0.1 e 500; insomma, al solito dipende dai tuoi gusti e dal tuo setup. Io sono Fabio da Roma! Ciao!

For all users that don't understand Italian (I guess they must be the most...):

probably original Fuzz Faces had 0.01uF output cap, but in many cases you can hear talking about 0.1uF, that gets the tone quite warmer. You must also consider the value of the output pot because of the RC circuit influence on the output frequencies. Two versatile choices could be:

- cap: 0.01uF, pot: 500K log; or
- cap: 0.1 uF, pot: 100K log (maybe is better because of the lower output impedance)

By the way, let your ears choose, keeping in mind the "colour" of the rest of your setup.

Comunque: in molti, me compreso, consigliano la configurazione .1 - 100K, soprattutto se hai una strato, che è già bella brillante di suo.

Io ho costruito un sacco di roba; per quanto riguarda questo genere ad esempio ho realizzato un "Boutique Fuzz Face Late '60" (da GGG; a proposito, grazie!) e, sempre parlando di transistor al germanio, un clone del caro vecchio RangeMaster con dei veri OC44. Tutto studiato e misurato per avere caratteristiche di dispersione e guadagno ottimali ed il bias a puntino; e devi sentire che suoni!!!

Il tuo FF è al Germanio o al Silicio (o misto)? Io ti consiglio di usare il germanio, perchè esige rispetto assoluto ma regala un sound unico.

BTW, everybody, and me, suggest the .1 - 100k combination, that should be even better with the "sparkling" sound of a strato!

I made lots of pedals. In "transistor equipped" zone I made excellent Germanuim Late'60 Fuzz Faces (from GGG; many thanx to you guys)
and OC44 Rangemaster clone. Every transistor is choosen by the right values of leakage and gain and perfectly biased. WHAT A SOUND!

Is your FF a Ge or a Si type (or both)? I suggest Germanuim 'cause it wants respect but gives unique sound.

è solo un gioco di parole che ho usato per il mio gruppo...
attualmente non ci chiamiamo così,
ma tutto quello che faccio da solo ha questa firma.

io ho costruito fino ad ora un TubeScreamer 808 con
un JRC4558D originale trovato per caso e con un bypass eletronico
(flipflop) più semplice dell'originale; poi un sonic distortion con
true bypass (3PDT), un circuito Lo-Fi (il Lofo Mofo di Escobedo),
un pedale volume-booster-A/B switch (una specie di minimixer!) e
un EA Tremolo che ha un problema: non funziona la profondità,
ancora devo scoprire da cosa dipende... a proposito se ne
capisci posso chiedere a te?

 Fine / Opinions may vary
 Search for the FF articles, there's a [2n2369 ?] transistor recommended for FF Q1's, I think that's the part#, I'm about to Si FF tweek, I just recieved a bucha these types yesday.
 Q2 is less finicky, and many more types [Q2 doesn't require the low gain spec like Q1] will work well there.
 There's the Miss Piggy FF...uses a piggyback transistors [2] for Q1...this effectively lowers the gain of Q1.
 I used an 8 pin socket for piggybacking
 pin 1:  Q1'a' Collector  [collector resistor for Q1 conneciton also]
 Pin2:  Q1a base [and input connections]
 Pin3:  Q1a emitter [ground also]
 Pin 4:  Q1a emitter
 Pin5   Q1'B' emitter
 Pin6   Q1b's emitter
 Pin7   Q1b's base and Q1'a' base
 Pin 8   open...Q1b's collector is Not connected
 THis way you can use pins 4 and 5 to plug in resistor values between 10k and 0k, and the rest of the IC socket lugs for transistor swapping. Makes for very solidly mounted sockets, allows EZ tweeking of the cross emitter resistors...
 There's a layout, well drawn around here for the Miss Piggy's pigface, I don't think it shows the 8 pin IC socket though...as long as the connections are made right it should work...Good Luck !!!
