tube screamer schematic vs. actual Ibanez TS-9 unit

Hi all,

I'm more or less a newbie, but have successfully modded a DS-1 (huge difference) and a TS-9 for both 808 specs and more gain.  This is definitely addictive  :D

My question regards the ts-9/808 schematics that I have found both here and at generalguitargadgets.  Every 9/808 schematic I have found lists 2 transistors in the circuit, yet my Ibanez reissue that I modded has 7 transistors.

I haven't traced through the whole circuit of my Ibanez yet, but I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this.  All the 'mod' sites say that changing the chip and the 2 resistors will give you the 808 circuit.  If that's true, why are there 7 transistors?

Thanks!!!!

The real schematic can be found at GEOFEX (see the link at the top of the page). Most other 'screamer schems I believe have one or both buffers removed.

Also, I think one or more of those transistors in the Ibanez unit is for switching?

- Input and output buffers = 2
- switching FETs = 2
- flip flop latching circuit = 2
- TS-7 and TS-10 have an extra buffer transistor = 1

They are both the "real" schematics I assure you.

This one is if you want to use a 3PDT for true-bypass:

And this is the full circuit with the flip-flop switching (hence the extra transistors):

The one at GEO is of a TS-9 and the one at General Guitar Gadgets is of a TS-808.

Thanks for all of the info!!!  It sounds like as long as I go true bypass, I can forget about all the buffers . . . and extra transistors.

I'm glad I have this cleared up, thanks again all!!!

Yeah, sorry Steve, I forgot that the GEOFex one wasn't the entire schem, for some reason I was thinking it was and that the schem at GGG was for the Son of Screamer. Stupid memory. It ain't getting any better. ;)

That's a bone of contention in some circles...
Passive sucks.
