Hehe. I won't derail this thread with my they-peaked-with-Empire opinions then. :)

Built this one last week and must say the tone control is great!
It has a good degree of tone control and the distortion and sustain is superb for metal type sound.
I like it's tone qualities better then the Voodoo labs OD I made with the extra clipping stage.

This one is a keeper 8)

Can you link to the schem please?  Or is it over at ampage?  I know it's right under my nose...

Question:
Does this pedal Employ "Mid Scoop"?

Mark Hammer

That's what I like about that tone-control circuit.  It produces a midscoop at one extreme of rotation.  Feel free to play around with the cap values in the tone control.

And also consider doing something in the second clipping stage which is like what gets done in the Proco Rat.  That is, use two separate ground legs instead of one to produce a different gain structure for the highs and lows.  As shown in the linked-to schematic, the second stage provides full-bandwidth gain of roughly 22x, via the 4k7/1uf network.  If you ran a second ground leg in parallel, with a 3k3/33nf network, that would give you a gain of 31x starting around 1.5khz.  That may not seem like a huge difference, but remember that it was be exaggerated by the gain in stage 1.

That addition may give more of what you like than, say, making the 390pf cap in the tone circuit a higher value to let more upper mids through.

Thanks Mark!
Is the scoop at both ends of the tone control rotation? or just at the end of the clockwise rotation?

Mark Hammer

Not knowing how you wired up your tone pot, I won't comment on clockwiseness.  But, yes, the scoop is only at one end of rotation.  At the other end, one gets a sound that tames the top end and lets more of the lower mids through for a more vocal sound.

Yes in my case extreme clockwise.

with your help and input this is what I did to the Voodoo lab I made.
Would you also recommend to do this if I was to build the Roseray circuit?

Just curious why you didn't originally included the second ground leg to your original circuits?, is this something you came up with or came across since designing thous circuits?

Mark Hammer

It didn't occur to me until responding to your note today.  It is liberally stolen from the Rat.

This one should work.
