Here is my almost finished box.

I still have to put a little more black on the sides, and more clear.

While letting it dry for a while, I decided to try a webcab for my laptop. Not as good as my digital camera, but always available.

Thanks to Fret Wire for the idea...  :D

QuoteHey Giles, you got an airbrush for X-Mas? That's great. Have any experience with one? The possibilities would be endless for FX graphics, not to mention guitar finishing. You can do the first 3-color sunburst pedal. Smile

I glued a thin wood laminate on the top for the wood look. So that's real wood.

Added 12/04/2005: I had to start it all over again...

I only get no-sho box :? .

I d like to try it too,I prefer wood to alu in general

Thumbs up for Gilles C

Thanks guys, I'm glad that you like :P

I had time to add a little clear mixed with a bit of black on the sides, and now it has the color I wanted.

You probably noticed the little gap between the wood laminate and the top of the box. I should have used bondo to fill it right at the beginning, because it seems to get wider after each coat I give. I'll let it dry a few days, and will try to fill it with epoxy. Then I'll add a lot of clear.

I'm learning here, and it's not so bad anyway. The shadow caused by the light makes it look a bit worst than it is. But I am using this one to gain some experience. The next one should be perfect, if this word exist. Which I doubt.   :)

But I can try to make it better every time. That's the way I see it.

Gilles

Added: I decided to put on some clear before I let it rest for a few days. It (the little gap) is almost ok now. So I won't have to use epoxy or anything else to correct it. It just needs some more clear and some sanding in-between to make it smooth.

I'll show how I did it someday. I mean, the wood laminate I used, etc...

I love wood, so it won't be the last time I use it.

Fret Wire

Wow! You didn't waste any time! :D  Looks good, if that's the practice pedal, I can't wait to see the next!! Tri-color sunburst fx pedals...too cool.

Nice work Giles! 8)

     Don't forget that it's your idea...

When I began painting this one, I had the Fender kind of sunburst in mind. That could even be a practice shot for my "actually" natural wood look guitar  that I am modding right now to get more of a Tele style. That would make a nice couple. Kind of husband and wife... A guitar and its effect.  A nice love story!

For the next effect box, I could use a Pearl Blue color, some Pearl Red, and a bit of Pearl Yellow in place of Black, Brown and Red. :)  Just for a nice change. But I'll do another one like this one for sure.  :)

Perfectly clear!

Btw, what is your native language?  Mine is French.

radio

Gilles

In French it could be "un bon glissement" :D

I described my location as "middle of Europe" which is as vague as
politically untrue.
I live in Luxembourg, small country between Belgium France and
Germany.Thereby my nativ language is Luxemburgish which is
a Franconian dialect. My country over the centuries was conquerred
by many "neighbours" that always tried to impose their culture and
language. In our schools we (have to) learn 3languages like the Swiss
but we opted for French(official administrativ),German and English
Luxemburgish is not really noted in school.

What effect will "fill up" the interiors of your box and what is it
likely to be named?

"The SunburstChief" is my guess :)

OK, a good move, shift, transition??? I feel what you mean, but I can't put it into exact words.

Hey, by searching on the net, I learned a little bit more about your country. I thought that Luxembourg was part of another countrty   , but I learned that it is a country. Sorry, we all have something to learn every day.

What I took out to paint the box was  R.G. 's  "Hum Free Splitter/A/B/Y Box" that I finally found last week. But I was still having hum with it so I put it aside for a while. This could be what I put inside in place of it:

http://www.angelfire.com/az3/dimitri/images/ea0594.pdf

But wired as an A/B Effect Loop Box.

For the name, I though of "Sound Burst".

Sunburst Chief" is close enough...

Gilles

Gilles
"a good move " is perfectly correct!
I would't pretend knowing all countries less than 1000 sq miles
Of those Luxembourg is the biggest,999 sq miles which is easier
to remember than "our" usual kilometers in square. :D

I d better stop now because I don t want to stay off-topic!

Well, of course you know what you have to build into it.......a Woody!!

Incubus

I hate you.

A few months ago, I had the exact same idea.

Different sunbursts to match different guitars...the whole bit.

I haven't made such a box yet, but I was thinking that no-one else had thought of it, and when I eventually made it, I'd be worshipped as a hero.

Well, that's the end of that one.......but I do have one other idea that I've seen implemented on other "things", but not on pedals.

Once I do that, I'll post pics if it works out as intended.

Your box looks fantastic.

I have no life.

Paul Marossy

So, how'd you do the sunburst? With an airbrush?

Gilles C

Hahaha... Well, I have to admit it came to my mind.

But as you already know, I already have a Boss AC-2. So that's why I tried to find something else.

But having heard both, the Woody (of course...   ) and the AC-2, would you say they are different enough to justify a build?

Ah, so many things to do, and so little time

What I want to do in 2005 is put every good sounding effects I built in boxes, and make myself a pedal board controlled by a PIC to select whatever effect I want.

Sorry Incubus!

But then, if you've got another idea... I'll/we'll wait for the pics.

And don't tell anybody before you do it...

Quote from: PaulSo, how'd you do the sunburst? With an airbrush?

Yes Paul, as I mentionned in another post, I received an airbrush for Xmas. So Fret Wire suggested the 3-color sunburst to me when he read about it...

One of the things I wanted to do is put more details to the daulphin I painted on my Strat when I painted it. I used a stencil then, but now I'm ready for something more lifelike.

http://www.finitesite.com/gtechblues/photos/Guitars.jpg

The one with a natural wood look will get the sunburst treatment when I'm done with adding a neck pick-up and a new neck (going from short-scale to long scale).

Btw, here are the sites where I found ideas on how to do a sunburst.

http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/sunburst.html

http://home.flash.net/~guitars/sunburstaerosol.html

But I didn't use a mask. I just sprayed from the inside at an angle.

I'm not Mark, but I do have an AC-2 and I've built a Woody. They do sound different enough to build the Woody even if you have an AC-2 but don't expect the Woody to make your electric guitar sound exactly like an accoustic.

The AC-2 is better at emulating an acoustic than the Woody, but I don't think Mark ever claimed that the Woody would give you an exact emulation. It gives your electric a bit of acoustic flavour, is a nice easy build and costs way less than an AC-2. I don't regret building mine one bit.

Paul Marossy

Yes, I remember that post about your airbrush. Nice work!  8)

So, it seems that I'll have to build one   :P

But right after my last post, I remembered that one of the reasons that made me choose another circuit than the Woody for that box is that the sunburst colors always makes reference to a Strat in my head. More electric than accoustic.

So, I though that another box showing more wood than the sunburst would be more appropriate for it. Then, I could call it a Woody...

I already have an idea for that box, but I'll have to finish this one before. But I can build the circuit anytime.

Ive had to learn soldering, drilling, first-aid, stencilling, hand-painting, more first-aid, spray-painting .... and then you do THAT.

That looks too cool  Cant wait to see it finished...
Me too  :P

But I have to let the paint dry a few days before I can apply and sand the clear coats.

Fret Wire

When I think of a sunburst finished pedal, I kinda think of ROG's Professor Tweed with a Strat style 2/3 color sunburst, or a Marshall amp sim with the Les Paul style flame top sunburst....bookmatched of course
