Quote from: Paul MarossyI assume the sponge would be dry? Or would it be damp? Gee, that would be a literal string damper!

Har-de-har-har!  I nominate Paul to be "official substitute punster" while I'm off in the Eastern Bloc!

Loop an end of some wool yarn string, then lace it through from between bridge tailpiece to an outside [e/g] string, the through the playing part of the strings and dampen to taste.
Try leather for a More Metal Mute effect.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I wonder how much of the 'impact' of an upright bass comes from the sheer mass of air moved with the first impulse as the string moves back from beign plucked?
Maybe a triggered envelope , with very short rise and fall, fed to a low frequency resonant filter, and then mixed into the straight pickup signal, would do the job convincingly.
Has anyone tried to get Zach's Woolly Mammoth to give an upright sound?

I thought that the Woolly Mammoth was more of a bass fuzz...

id add a little fast delay for good measure, you know where theres just one or two repeats but faster than your ears can register it as an echo, so it adds a sort of hollowness, or boxiness... i use this trick with my ruby and fab echo(with d-time mod) cause my ruby has no reverb...but just for a more "live" or "woody" tone... i guess it mimicks (somewhat) the way the sound bounces off of different surfaces in a hollowbodied instrument... granted its a cheap trick, not on par with a real acoustic instrument...but it might help you get a little acoustic vibe going...

Don't neglect the option of actually finding someone who can actually play upright bass! If you just need this sound for a few tunes, a "guest" bass player might be cool, and you might meet someone that makes for a good musical partnership. If you plan on using this sound a lot, you really should have someone that plays upright anyway! :icon_biggrin: :icon_wink:
