Could Phototransistors be used?

Hello

Just wondering why photocells or Ldr/Led combination are usual in
compressor or phaser circuits but I never stumbled over a schematic
that used phototransistors.

Is it only a matter of price or are they not adequate for similar jobs??

they don`t have linear resistance;
they need extra DC supply, which interferes with the rest of the circuit;
