Quote from: petemooreA coupld of mods to try...[Edit note...this cct. responds differently alot to amp types].
First off, i couldn't find a 39k, and started pondering, that seems alot of emitter resistance, a47k pot kept popping up in front of me and 'saying' Put ME in there...so I did, and set it for exactly 38.8k.
I raised the input impedance a little bit also, the 820k is like 890k, the 180k/150k...these changes were imposed because 'close enough' was much easier with the available values, minimal difference probably not worth even noting except to be accurate.
Last 'mod'...a SB Germanium in Q1 position, [NTE158's, 2n3906, others also tried]. Works, sounds good with any of them. The voicing seemed to change with the SB Q, Hfe ~105 reading with Q 'n D DMM Hfe check.
I dialed the Q2 emitter V/R, this changes the bias [of course] and tone.
39k...It biased 'low' at a lower Q2C voltage, raising the voltage by changing the R value made quite a difference in the sound.
Whenever I see the arrow pointing up between E and B, [Indicating PNP] I'm inclined to throw in a PNP Ge.
My other Axis is now BIlls' [good o'l school buddy from wayy back] ...he don't like much, liked the RM Axis...so there it will stay ! That's a great Fuzz Box too...I haven't A/B'd them directly, but they seem to work very similarly.
These mods aren't all groundbreaking, but seemed to help me tune the pedal to very nice, the addition of the V/R...well I'm glad I put that in there...doen'st turn it into a different animal, allow a little variation, but mainly tunes 1 transistory sound in or out a little and 'fizz' control [FLOABTerm] 3 affect the bass 'bloom' or squash tones the circuit has.
This is what I'd call a 'guitar concert' pedal, that's what it excels at,[think B.O.G. 'n all].
At ~1/2volume on guitar, picking dynamics for Blues is excellent, soft clean, medium breakover, hard OD's it...becomes much quieter/louder between soft/hard picking..super cool tone, with a soft bass note a 'quicksmash' on the high strings totally breaks through and the shift from Bass Treble Bass is profoundly fun to play rythms with.
Cranked GuitVol. the thing gets super thick bass, alot of low string high end gets through if you hit hard for only the attack time, low Bass notes also 'squash' [between low E string open to about 5th fret]...
All in all a super fun play pedal, I had to build another to be 'MinE'...I only really got to check the first one out on Bill's amp.
Since I still haven't mastered getting a CD I make to become a sound sample, review posts are for those who like to read about it   .
I suppose I could try again, sorry to ask you to type out something you figured out, I just kept hitting a wall last time I tried...there are pages on everything else... :D ...I have available hours to attempt this again, and would like to re-try...maybe there's a page about how it's done written for simples like me with limited computer prowess / terminology understanding...thanks to RDV for his attempts to help me last time we tried!
