I'm a total newbie to DIY stompboxes, just finished my first (an Orange Squeezer in a tuna can), and don't really have too much money to invest in this hobby at the moment.  Just got an old non functional Rockson Distortion (orange box) off ebay for $10.  Cracked it open and what do we have but a JRC4558.  Not to mention enough parts for me to probably build a Tubescreamer w/ no $ (plus I can just reuse the enclosure and pots!).

Probably not a big deal to most but I was stoked and thought I'd share.  If you come across these they look like nothing but they might have some good parts in them.

I opened up a Squier 10-watt practice amp the other day, and it had a couple of JRC4558's in it, too.  I thought that was strange, since it sounded like crap--until I plugged it into my 2x12 cab.  It's actually a nice distortion.

Huh, who'd of thought?

I think that's a common experience.  I've heard similar stories from many people.  I hear my crappy crate practice amps sound pretty decent (relative to a crappy crate) through good speakers.  Of course, I don't have a decent speaker cab, so I can't verify that.

Actually it has 2 JRC4558's

It also has a long IC (14 pins) that's labeled TC4007UBP.  Does anybody know what this might be able to be used in?

I actually thought about getting it to work to see if I'd want to keep it, but I really want a tubescreamer!  My wife made me promise not to spend any more money on this right now because I went a little crazy when I found this site (and geofex) a couple of weeks ago(I also picked up some old tube PA amps off ebay to mod for guitar), so this is a nice way to build a free tubescreamer.

That's strange.  I've got a Rockson Super Overdrive, which is an exact clone of a Boss SD-1 (even the layout).  I would have thought a Rockson Distortion would have been a clone of a DS-1.

That would make sense....  They definately look like Boss ripoffs

here's what it looks like:

For some reason I can't find anything about these pedals on google other than where to buy them.

I acquired a broken 'gorilla type amp, junk, took everything off the frame, fitted two wood ends, and had a predrilled, prepotted enclosure, nice shape, plenty of room.

at first when i saw logic, i thought it was for switching, but could be for clipping or for boost.
