fuzz face clears up

hi,

i just finished my first project (fuzzface)
but i've got 2 questions:

1) is it normal that the fuzz "clears up" very trebly just at the end when i turn the "fuzz" knob all the way up?

2) when i put a ts9, in OFF postion, before the fuzz my fuzz sounds totally different...it's got more gain and sounds clearer?

thnx!

My suggestion would be to search the form for transistor biasing and the loading effect of the fuzz face.    I assume your ts9 isn't true bypass and is buffering your guitar signal.

This Is normal, the TS has buffered output, that will...well [read '2)'...what you wrote for a pretty accurate description of a prebuffered FF sound.
With a buffer on the front end of a FF, most of the guitar volume cleanup feature is lost.

thnx!

Do you mean that the fuzz goes away and gets trebly when the fuzz knob is cranked all the way up?  If that's happening, then it's probably not normal.  All the Fuzz Faces that I've built just keep getting nastier and nastier as the fuzz knob's turned up.

Not sure what could cause that...but I'd double-check the wiring on the fuzz pot to make sure all the connections are solid.

no it keeps getting fuzzier/nastier but at a certain point (when the the knob is allmost totally all the up) it gets very trebly/clear with fuzz

What Value, and what taper pot did you use ?

The problem you are experiencing is described several places in articles about the fuzz face.  Usually you can correct the problem by adding a capacitor before Q1, and also try to change the 8.2 K ohm resistor to a larger one (11 K).  A better description of this is here:

Hope it will help.

do you mean that putting a cap before the Q1 will help stopping the "boost" of the tube screamer?

thnx

No, it should remove the noise you experience when you turn the fuzz-knob all the way up, it should also remove the radio-interference you might hear.

This is exactly what is happening with mine.  It still have a lot of fuzz, but the thing is noisy as hell at max also.  and when the fuzz is turned down a little bit (a 10th of a turn) the noise goes away and I loose almost all treble from the signal.

Though even when the fuzz is maxed the noise goes away when I turn the guitars tone knob all the way off.

I can't fix it no matter what I do.  My bias is all correct as far as I can tell.  My connections are good.  Its just mind boggleing.  I even have the 2.2uF cap before Q1.

perhaps if you added a cap say, 33n or so, from the wiper of the fuzz pot to the emitter of Q2, this would help bring back bite with the fuzz down...youd have to experiment with the cap value...
