Could please someone suggest a way to add a variable amplitude output to this circuit? An opamp stage, maybe?

It says that the circuit draws 20 ma, and I was wondering if I remove the LED, will that lower the consumption noticeably?

a pot (~5 to ~250k) @ the output.
from 5 to 15V supply, the LED alone consumes 3 to 12mA...
